The Origins of Interior Design

April 15, 2007 by sachinskg

There is a long history in interior design that demands the humanity to recollect. Recalling its history often speaks flawlessly of the changes that accompany with it. How interior design has interwoven with the culture, at that certain point in time, affects history. How it fashions civilization, as it blends with time, makes history.

Although we are not students of interior design, it may well be good to trace back its beginnings. Perhaps we don’t have to go far back in time. Let us start by tracking the 70s. This decade has been marked with intensity. The popularity of hard plastic furnitures, the emergence of peculiar shapes and designs, and the extremely vibrant display of colors draw a distinct effect on a decent number of interior designers. The significant contribution that could have drawn the line for that decade in history would have been the unwavering effect it made to the interior designers of the 80s and 90s. Even their contemporaries of today have opted to revive the exalted years of the 60s and 70s—thus catching us surprised along the way of the so-called retro. But who are we, commoners, to reason against the caprice of the vogue interior design world.

Nevertheless, there are also a lot of wonderful things the 70s have imparted until the present. And this what makes the history of interior design very interesting. The priceless paintings, the precious lamps and decors, the invaluable artifacts, and the simple yet elegant wooden furnishings are things we ought not to exclude.

Tracing back the roots of interior design can help us move forward radically. We should learn from it to create our own history instead of reviving the past and brooding what is retro. A glorious future waits on someone who takes heed on the past and lives the present without carrying along the mistake. Though it seems that we have not really unlived our past mistakes, aspirants should trace back the origins of interior design.
