Writing History Through Interior Design

May 8, 2007 by sachinskg

The history of interior design is extremely interesting. You can browse through it at your pleasure. You will surely notice at how striking its history is. Interior design has come a long way.

As you go further back in history, you will realize how interior design has blended among cultures, has crossed borders, and has traveled far and wide between regions and across continents. This is a very remarkable aspect of the human life. An interior design speaks profoundly of the people and its culture in a particular period in time. It can even give you an understanding of their beliefs and norms.

In general, interior design has a lot to tell of the people living in a particular place and time. But it sure is a fact that no interior designer is absolutely similar. Each has a very distinct trait. This trademark draws the line between the general outlook of the time and the uniqueness and individuality of every designer. Let us try to take for example town houses or row houses.

From a distance, they might have a similar architectural design. But once you go for a closer look at each unit, you would surely discover the perplexity of the human person living in it. You would immediately notice the differences from the façade itself without bothering to enter each house. The arrangements, decorations, and designs distinct from one another are characteristics of such individuality.

A student in the future researching on the history of interior design might be excused for making a conclusion that our society is either excessively preoccupied with perfection or immoderately naïve allowing people to live in pigpens.

But whatever point of view they have in making such conclusions, interior design would continue to be an effective tool in writing down history. And those reading its history should acknowledge the style, the originality, and the uniqueness of each period.
